Rosemary's top ten tips

1. Always make time to lie down in the Alexander rest position.
2. Remember to sit evenly on both sit bones.
3. Walk tall even if it's only the length of a corridor at work.
4. Take a break every twenty minutes if on the computer.
5. Check that your car seat fits you especially if stiff after journeys.
6. Do a shoulder shrug every hour.
7. Check that your alignment is correct when exercising, especially if using weights.
8. Rest your arms on a cushion as you watch TV.
9. When reading in bed use pillows to support your back.
10. See an Alexander teacher before problems develop.

Tip for Summer:- Usually a time for more outdoor activity to get fit. Whatever you choose to do (gardening, walking more, running, cycling) help your muscles by stretching gently before and after and, of course, do a bit of lying down in the Alexander rest position. To save your back while weeding, invest in a good quality kneeling pad.

How to look after your feet!

1. Do ankle circles occasionally while sitting down.
2.
Change the height and style of your shoes every day to work the leg and foot muscles in different ways.
3. In fact walk to work in flats or low heels, keeping your power heels for meetings.
4. My personal favourite is a basin of warm water with marbles and a dash of lavender; roll your feet back and forth.
5. Use the Carnation 'Pediroller' to massage sore feet. Do it slowly. A firm favourite with clients.

Tip for Winter:- When Xmas shopping don't walk round and round the shops accumulating heavy bags. Take a tea break at least once while shopping and take bags back to the car (if you have one) every so often.

Tip for Spring:- Thinking of getting fit? Don't try to do it all at once after mostly staying indoors during the cold weather. Set small goals and avoid injuries. If your main way of exercising is walking, make sure you have good technique.

Tip for Autumn:- Wear gloves, don't just jam your hands in your pockets. Your shoulders will hunch and your neck will disappear into your new winter coat!
