Recommended reading for pregnant women who know or want to know how the Alexander Technique can help with their back pain, sciatica, aching shoulders or neck: ‘Pregnancy and Birth: The Alexander Way’ by Ilana Machover. I’d bought the 1993 version to study when some of my clients became pregnant. Little did I think I would soon be needing it myself. I found it very helpful and often did the exercises while waiting for clients to arrive. Here’s a short excerpt from an article Illana machover wrote.
“Unfortunately, most pregnant women who seek the help of a teacher do so at a relatively late stage, usually after beginning to suffer from backache. In teaching a pregnant woman, I find it very helpful to be fully aware of the changes in her body. It is also useful to point them out to the woman herself. Nowadays most pregnant women attend antenatal clinics and classes and know quite a lot about the process of pregnancy; but nobody except an Alexander teacher will explain this process from the point of view of use and balance.”
In my experience over the last 18 years of teaching, it’s never too late to benefit from some Alexander input whatever stage of pregnancy. If you want to read the whole article, it’s in Direction magazine Volume 1 Number 6.
